Planning the Company Picnic 101: Themes

Summer is made for barbecues and gatherings, so it’s time to plan that company picnic! Make it different from year to year by incorporating a theme.

A theme can give your attendees an opportunity to dress the part if they want to, and it helps you narrow your focus about games and food choices. Consider one of the following:

Caribbean

Bright colors, jerk chicken, and tropical drinks (with little umbrellas!) give your picnic a tropical vibe. Add reggae music and invite attendees to wear beach clothing. Bonus points if you host the picnic at a lake where you can actually get in the water! Add some umbrellas to give people a break from the sun and add to the beach-like atmosphere.

Wild West

Get a grill and cook some steaks and burgers, cowboy style! Invite your guests to wear hats, bandannas, and boots, and offer prizes for the best costume. Include games like horseshoes or Nerf gun target practice.

Carnival

Carnival games are a hit with kids and adults alike. Offer fun foods like funnel cakes and cotton candy. Set up some tents or canopies to divide the game and food areas.

Casual Red Carpet

No one wants to dress up for a company picnic, so invite them to dress for a casual red carpet in funny clothes that might be considered the opposite of formal. Offer prizes for the silliest costume. Serve popcorn along with the rest of your picnic fare, and have attendees walk down a roped-off red carpet to your outdoor theater for a screening of a family-friendly movie or a slide show about the company’s year.

Pirates

Another fun costume contest! Host a treasure hunt and pirate games, like a one-eyed bean bag toss or a three-legged race. Make sure you’ve got some fans on hand to keep everyone cool with all that activity!
